Night View in Singapore |
Salivating in Singapore
There are three mainstays of Singaporean dining...1. Food Courts - located at shopping malls, neighbourhood centres
2. Hawker Centres
3. Coffee Shops
The quickest way to identify the stalls with the best food in a given hawker centre is by the length of their queues. Singaporeans love their food, and think nothing of standing in line for an hour to get their fix.
Almost every hawker centre serves up the ubiquitous chicken rice, roti prata, fishball noodles and chai tao kuey in some form or fashion. Some hawker centres offer more exotic dishes, though: crayfish hor fun (Hong Lim Center), turtle soup (Aljunied Crescent) and lok-lok (Old Airport Road), to name a few.
In Singapore, coffee shops are eateries located in residential areas, or neighbourhood shop houses.
Some Typical Local Cuisine
Katong Laksa |
Katong Laksa is usually lighter in colour and the noodles are shorter,
so much so that patrons are encouraged to eat the entire dish with a
spoon alone, slurping up the delectable broth at the same time.
To add
to the cholesterol-packed goodness, cockles are usually served together
with fish cakes, prawns and beansprouts.
Nasi Padang |
Nasi means rice, Padang refers to the place in Indonesia. As its name suggests, Nasi Padang is Malay/Indonesian rice served with a variety of dishes.
Most Nasi Padang stalls will provide fried chicken, curried chicken, beef rendang and prawns.
Kueh Pie Tie |
This local dish is a Peranakan (Chinese and Malay fusion) staple.
It is in a shape of a small pie, stuffed with a turnip and prawn broth. The ‘pie crust’ is crunchy.
It fills your mouth with delightful flavours.
